Canon Powershot SX510 HS Ultrazoom Bridge Camera, 2013 |
2022.01.22 - Published
It's 2022 now and it has been 9 years since the launch of Canon's Powershot SX510 ultrazoom bridge camera. I have owned it for 8 months back in 2014 before selling it and replacing it with a digital SLR. Having come from a digital compact camera to bridge camera and then upgrading to APS-C sensor camera, I could look back and give a comparison of how this Canon Powershot SX510 was good and not good in ways.
Why the Canon Powershot SX510 was good (at the time, 2014)...
It resembled a tiny DSLR and was compact and light to travel
One camera, one lens that offers ultra-wide to super telephoto
Optical zooming compared to mobile phones using digital zoom (cropped images)
It retailed PhP 13,000 back in 2014 but I got it for 9k only
It is basically a digicam with full manual control of exposure
It offers manual focusing although it has limitations
Macro at ultra-wide can focus very close (almost touching the front element)
Neutral/indifference about the Canon SX510...
The Wi-Fi was hard to setup and never used
The filters and Auto Modes were not frequently used
12MP is good at the time
It wasn't super sharp like with DSLRs but decently clear shots
The images are somewhat soft (not too soft) which make it great for portraits
It gets hot filming 1080p but you can film long periods at 720p without heating
Super slow motion 640x480p/120fps and 320x240p/240fps
Limitations of the SX510 and why I upgraded to a digital SLR...
Limited to one fixed lens
Maximum aperture of f/3.4 (24mm) to f/5.8 (720mm)
Full HD video but only at 24 fps
No microphone input
The Canon had horribly slow AF when zoomed (only fast at ultrawide 24mm)
Not the camera you want to shoot in low light, even with image stabilization
Low native ISO up to 3200 only
Images frequently had noise even at low ISO or under bright daylight
You need a proper light setup to appreciate this camera
The LCD is fixed to the body, it does not flip or swivel (hard for selfies and vlogs)
No filter attachment (eg. for hoods and filters)
Conclusion
Owning this camera was surely a big improvement over digital cameras at the time and mobile phones were not that good for photography either. I had used it alot and enjoyed this camera despite its limitations and slow performance. The image quality noticeably suffers at the telephoto range (as well as autofocus) and in low light, but I found ways and it didn't detract from me enjoying it. Ultimately, I finally upgraded to a DSLR which had the benefit of bigger sensor, better low light performance, lenses with bigger f-stop and blurry background, full manual control, and interchangeable lenses... I never looked back.
