Itong famous commercial punchline from a few years ago around 2009: “Anong mabibili mo sa 20 Pesos?”… and my answer is “BENTE-ULAM!”
Napaka sikat nitong bente ulam sa Recto, across from Isetann Recto. Open sila all-day doon sa tulay pero malakas kapag mga past 6PM, kahit nga 9PM malakas pa rin sila. Marami mga estudyante nag dine in doon sa sidewalk, fully packed palagi ang mga tables kaya twice lang ako nakapag dine-in experience at madalas tine-take out ko at the time (2012).
I often like to pig-out to get rid of internal disharmony. Tatlo order nauubos ko minsan (3 rice + 6 ulam) at ang halaga ay 60 Pesos lang lahat. Pwede na ang rice, medyo mushy pudding pero mas gusto ko nga ganito kasi nakakabusog, kesa yung parang tuyo at hangin na rice.
You can also pick any two ulam from the menu: Hotdog, Spam, Luncheon meat, Sunny-side-up eggs, or Siomai (or 1 ulam + 3 pcs siomai). To avoid umay at the end of the meal, I like to gulp down some apple juice from Zest-O, which they also sell.

Imagine niyo guys... Prices never fluctuated wildly until late 2010s. Ang Andok's Dokito Chicken noong 2012 ay naabutan ko pa na bente pesos lang. Noong 2019 nasa 43 Pesos na. And imagine, ngnayong 2023 ay 80 Pesos na ang Andoks? I have so much regrets dahil hindi ako masyado nabili back then. Ngayon napakamahal na, pero the price is still reachable at super sulit naman.
Isa pa sa mga paboritong chibog ko ay Fibisco Choco Chip Cookies. Dati nasa 30 Pesos lang in early 2010s. Since 2020 nasa 65 Pesos na and now 2023 at 70 Pesos.
Tortillos extra big back in 2001 was 17 Pesos. Ngayon yung medium size is already 33 Pesos. Noong 2001 sinasabaw ko pa ng mayo magic dahil mas mura kesa sa real mayo. Ang isang pouch ng mayo magic noon 2001 ay nasa 28 pesos, the real mayo was 35 Pesos.
Marami pa ako naaalala. Anyway, wala nang halaga ang piso ngayong 2023. Ano magagastos mo sa isang daang piso ngayon, pamasahe lang.
Anyway, looking back at this old post brings me an escape and relief. Happier times, carefree times , when prices were MUCH lower, marami ka mabibili sa 50 Pesos noong mga panahon na iyon. Bente pesos nga busog ka na. I miss the bente ulam sa Recto.
