Kuya Kim Atienza is a lover of animals big or small, and he loves to feature them on his very own show 'Matanglawin'. Please don't forget to catch our group Pet Rats Philippines on the May 31st episode. This episode is about keeping wild rats as pets.
Rats are one of the sweetest pets around, but many people misunderstand them because of the myths built around these creatures. It may sound even more extreme, but yes we also love WILD RATS!
Just to avoid any confusion, allow me to explain. Pet rats and wild rats come from the same species called 'Brown Rats' (scientific name Rattus norvegicus). People began domesticating these beautiful creatures as pets since the 18th century.
The brown coat of rats are their natural colors. In terms of behavior, they only have little difference as long as the wild rats were raised as pups. That way, they adapt to captivity at a very early age and get used to being handled by humans. After many generations of breeding, genetic mutations have appeared and now we see different colors and markings. The one that most of us have become familiar with are the albino white rats.
So what makes wild rats an interesting pet? They are considered to be the most purebred of all since it's the original color. You also notice a big difference in terms of size, agility and stamina. Some of the wild rats I've had in the past were bigger and stronger than the domesticated ones.
Squall (left) comes from a domesticated line. Thoriel (right) is a domesticated rat with both wild rats as parents. |
Again, we hope you could support our cause by watching ABS-CBN's Matanglawin on its May 31st episode. Thanks =)
Yours truly,
Rattus Yu
