The Hamster Club of the Philippines celebrated its first anniversary on January 24, 2015 at 4/F Jackman Plaza Muñoz. Pet Rats PH was there along with other pet groups who were also there to exhibit their pets and merchandise. Later in the afternoon there was a contest for the best hamsters across different categories.

Pet Rat Philippines representatives were more than enthusiastic to accommodate inquiries about rats as pets. We gave out educational handouts and also had a special group T-shirt made especially for the event. Our pet rats also made an appearance at the event so everyone could play with the cute cuddly critters.
Pet Rat Philippines was created by me Rattus Yu in 2010. The goal is not just to gather rat breeders in one place, but specifically to spread love for rats as lovely pets. I've been a strong advocate of this and used to tour the rats around the U-belt in Morayta back in 2011 -- to show people that they don't deserve the fierce reputation they have. Since then, there's been a steady growth of people who love rats (or at least less fearful of rats!).
About Pet Rats
Pet rats are one of the sweetest creatures on earth. They belong to the same family of rats that you see in the wild, and this species is called Brown Rats (scientific name 'Rattus norvegicus'). Do rats bite? In my 6 years of petting them, there was never an instance. You are most likely to be bitten by other animals, or get struck by a lightning... than be bitten by a pet rat!
If you're just starting out on your first ever pet rat, get a tall cage because rats love to climb. Rats usually have 6 - 12 pups per litter. For those who want to start breeding, make sure both rats don't have any history of illness at least 4 generations before.
How to tame a wild rat?
Taming a wild rat is no magic. It's a behavioral process that involves getting the rat used to the company of humans and being handled from a very young age. From experience, wild rats that have been raised from a young age are most likely to act like your regular domesticated pet rats.
From past experience, adult wild rats that I caught and kept for domestication usually died within 3 days due to stress. Female wild rats are friendlier and less prone to biting you after keeping them in captivity for a week or two but they may still bite out of self-defense.
Leptospirosis and other diseases
Contrary to what people think, rabies is unheard of in rats. The most common disease linked to rats is leptospirosis. This bacteria thrives in wet environments such as sewers and rice paddies. All animals that come into contact with these sources are potential carriers. Which only means that it's not exclusive to rats. And besides, PET RATS are kept in clean and loving homes so there's really no reason for them to magically contract diseases out of nowhere.
